Russia: The US presence in the region is the reason for the escalation of the situation
The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed strong disapproval of the "Eagle Partner 2024" military exercises held in Armenia in July, involving Armenian and American forces. Spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that the presence of American military personnel in the South Caucasus could exacerbate regional conflicts and lead to increased tensions.
"The presence of the Americans in the South Caucasus will only intensify the conflict in the region," Zakharova stated. This sentiment reflects Moscow's broader concerns about the growing influence of Western military alliances in areas traditionally within its sphere of influence.
Moscow's criticism comes amid strained relations with Armenia, particularly after Yerevan ceased its activities in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and publicly criticized the alliance. Russia has reaffirmed its loyalty to its allies despite Armenia's recent moves and statements.
“These military exercises are very worrying, especially in the situation where Yerevan has stopped its activities in the CSTO and criticizes that organization,” Zakharova noted, highlighting the potential for the drills to create new divisions and exacerbate existing tensions.
Zakharova also accused the West of attempting to manipulate Armenia into taking anti-Russian actions. “The West is frantically trying to encourage Armenia to take steps against Russia,” she said. She further criticized the imposition of NATO standards on Armenian forces through such military exercises and training programs, arguing that these efforts could fundamentally alter Armenia's security apparatus and influence its domestic and foreign policies.
The Russian Foreign Ministry's stance underscores the geopolitical complexities in the South Caucasus, where various global powers vie for influence. Russia views the region as critical to its strategic interests and is wary of any Western military presence that could challenge its dominance.
In response to the Eagle Partner 2024 exercises, Moscow has reiterated its commitment to its allies and emphasized the importance of maintaining regional stability. Russia's reaction also reflects broader concerns about NATO's expanding influence in the post-Soviet space, which Moscow perceives as a direct threat to its security interests.
The ongoing developments in the South Caucasus, particularly with Armenia's shifting alliances and the increased involvement of Western military forces, are likely to continue shaping the regional geopolitical landscape. As Armenia navigates its relationships with both Russia and Western powers, the balance of power in the South Caucasus remains a critical focal point for international diplomacy and security strategies.
