The Spanish Foreign Minister announced on Monday that his country will send 3.5 million euros equivalent to 3.8 million US dollars as emergency aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The move has come after several Arab countries suspended funding to UNRWA following Israel's claim that several employees of the organization were involved in the October 7 attack by Hamas against Israel in the name of Al Aqsa Hurricane. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has said that additional aid will be collected to support UNRWA's activities in the short term. UNRWA He said, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) provides aid to six million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain has explained that the 1.2 million refugees living in the Gaza Strip depend heavily on the aid provided by the organization to meet their daily needs. He added that UNRWA has refused to give up and there is a "grave risk" that its humanitarian efforts in Gaza will come to a halt in the coming weeks. He said, "the humanitarian situation in Palestine is a priority for our international cooperation."
