On the third anniversary of the occupation of the Armenian city of Varendra, the President of Azerbaijan called the conflict an effective way. During the 44-day Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, on October 17, 2020, the Azerbaijani army captured the town of Varendra in Nagorno-Karabakh, pushing back Armenian forces. Three years after the occupation of the city of Varendra, which Azerbaijanis call Fizuli, Ilham Aliyev visited this city yesterday and on Tuesday. According to TRT TV channel, pointing to Armenia's control over Nagorno-Karabakh, Aliyev said that when Nagorno-Karabakh was under Armenian control, some countries tried to convince Azerbaijan to let it go. They said that the problem will not be solved by war, but we have proven that the problem can be solved by war."

While protests continue in Armenia against the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijani forces, Aliyev called the topic of Nagorno-Karabakh closed. Describing the Armenian residents of the area as separatists, he stated: “The topic of the Karabakh conflict is closed once and for all. The book of separatists is closed once and for all!" The President of Azerbaijan, calling the city of Varendra "destroyed" during Armenian rule, stated that "Baku built a new city after the capture of Varendra." Aliyev also announced that by the end of 2026, Fizuli will be home to 22 thousands of Azerbaijani citizens. It should be noted that Armenia calls the escape of 120 thousand Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh after the arrival of Azerbaijani troops in the area “ethnic cleansing.” After the complete capture of Nagorno-Karabakh on September 19 and 20 of this year, Baku began the process of replacing Armenians with Azerbaijanis, living in this area.
