Five people died, and more than 40 were injured after a building collapsed in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.This was stated on Saturday by Assistant Superintendent of Police Peter Mtui who is in charge of the rescue operation in the building.

At the same time, the Director General of the Muhimbili National Hospital, Professor Mohamed Janabi has said that they have received 42 injuries so far.The rescue operation continues while the citizens cooperate with the government agencies including the fire brigade.There is fear that the number of dead may increase.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa Kassim has arrived in the area and spoke to the media saying that the rescue operation is ongoing to ensure that those covered by the rubble come out alive.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has apologized to those affected by the tragedy.According to witnesses, the apartment collapsed suddenly at three o'clock in the morning when the construction workers were continuing the activity of adding shops.

 

Thousands of citizens in the market have stopped their activities waiting to see their relatives who were buried in the rubble in the five-story building that collapsed at three o'clock this morning.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamia has said that the injured have been taken to Muhimbili National Hospital.According to the Fire and Rescue Service, they received information about the collapse of the Kariakoo Building.

"The rescue exercise is ongoing, we have already managed to save six people alive" We urge the people to calm down as we are strong and we are continuing the rescue efforts in collaboration with other agencies, added the Spokesman of the Fire and Rescue Service, Deputy Commissioner Puyo Nzalayaimisi.
