The Acting Chief of Police in Kenya last Friday was sentenced to six months in prison after repeatedly defying an order to testify about the whereabouts of three people who have disappeared after allegedly being arrested by police officers.
It will be remembered that the three people were appearing openly in social platforms to support the people's protests against the government in June and July this year.
High Court Judge in Nairobi Lawrence Mugambi had postponed the sentence for seven days to give Gilbert Masengeli, the Acting Inspector General of Police one last chance to appear in court before being jailed however Masengeli never did.
"In the event that he does not surrender to the Commissioner General (of prisons), the Minister of Internal Affairs should take all appropriate and legally permissible measures to ensure that Gilbert Masengeli is imprisoned," Mugambi said in his order.
Human rights activists in Kenya claim that dozens of people who took part in protests against the government were abducted by government prisons where most of them were later released.
President William Ruto of Kenya has promised to investigate these allegations even though he has strongly defended the actions and performance of the security departments during the protests.
