Majaliwa: About 155 people have died in Tanzania due to floods
Kassim Majaliwa, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, said yesterday Thursday that approximately 155 people have died in the country due to the heavy rains associated with El Nino, causing floods and landslides.
Tanzania and other East African countries; an area that is vulnerable to climate change has experienced heavier rains than usual in the current rainy season while dozens of deaths have also been reported in the neighboring country of Kenya.
The Prime Minister of Tanzania Kassim Majaliwa has said that more than 51,000 households and 200,000 people have been affected by the heavy rain while 155 people lost their lives and 236 others were injured.
Minister Kassim Majaliwa has told Parliament in Dodoma that heavy El Nino rains accompanied by strong winds, floods and landslides in various parts of Tanzania have caused disasters and great losses. These disasters include people losing their lives, crops being damaged, houses being flooded and collapsing, and damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges and railways.
