The Arab League has congratulated the African Union (AU) for being accepted as a permanent member of the G20 group, and expressed its hope that the Arab community will be happy if it is also given that status. Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said this while welcoming the decision of the G20 leaders to grant permanent membership to the African Union, AU. On Saturday, G20 members agreed to grant the AU permanent membership as part of the group's efforts to make it stronger and more inclusive. The decision was reached at the opening session of the two-day G20 summit held in New Delhi, India, over the weekend. Aboul-Gheit has praised the decision, saying it is a "positive step" that will bring success to both sides and will contribute to strengthening the position of African countries in the economic development of the world.

Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit has emphasized that this step will increase Africa's ability to contribute to solving important international issues such as climate change, energy security, food security and various other issues. The head of the Arab League has also expressed his hope that the request to join the G20 will be considered and given a satisfactory response. The African Union, with 55 member states, now has the same status as the European Union, the only regional institution with full membership of the G20. In his opening speech at the G20 summit held in India on the 9th and 10th of this September, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India invited the African Union which was represented by its Chairman Azali Assoumani to take a seat at the table of G20 leaders as permanent member.
