The killing of a prominent PKK member in Iraq
Turkish secret services have announced the death of a member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. Turkey introduced the PKK as a separatist and included the name of this party in the list of terrorist groups. Despite opposition from Baghdad and Damascus, the Turkish military is targeting northern Iraq and northern Syria under the guise of fighting the PKK. Middle East News reported on Wednesday, citing security sources in Turkey, that Jalal Birdal, one of the officials at the PKK's media and archives department, was killed in an operation in northern Iraq's Ghara region.
These sources added that Birdal, who had been a member of the PKK since he was a university student, has participated in several operations against Turkish forces in northern Iraq. Baghdad opposes Turkey's interventionist actions in Iraq and has complained to the United Nations about Ankara.
