The head of the human rights division of the United Nations has called on the nations of the world to consider the ongoing war in the province of North Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the humanitarian crisis in the area.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, visited a camp for internally displaced people, on the outskirts of the city of Goma, which is the capital of the North Kivu region, and met closely with citizens who fled their homes due to the attacks. and the rebels of March 23 or M23 for short.

He has emphasized the need to work on the things that cause the crisis, saying: "We must work hard so that peace can be found."

Turk is on an official visit to DRC at the invitation of the Congolese government. He is expected to meet with President Felix Tshisekedi and senior United Nations officials in the capital, Kinshasa.

Since January, the M23 gang has increased its attacks against civilians, DRC soldiers and their allies, and captured other areas including large cities and villages in North Kivu province. The leaders of Kinshasa accuse Rwanda of helping the Tutsi rebels.

The war has led to an increase in the number of refugees, most of whom have gathered in the suburbs near the city of Goma, increasing criminal activities and a large number of people who are at risk of being displaced.

The areas of Rutshuru and Masisi are currently facing the worst consequences of the conflict.
