US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that he plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin "very soon" after his inauguration on January 20.

Trump made the remarks in an interview with Newsmax host Rob Schmitt when asked about his strategy for ending the conflict and war in Ukraine, where he said "there's only one strategy, and it's up to Putin."

He added: "I can't imagine that (Putin) is very happy with the way things have gone, because it hasn't gone well for him either."

"I know he (Putin) wants to meet, and I will meet with him very soon," the US president-elect continued, adding: "I would have done it sooner, but you have to get into the office first."

During his campaign, Trump promised to end the Ukraine conflict with billions of dollars in aid to the Kiev government. He claimed he could end the hostilities "in 24 hours" with just a few phone calls.

However, since being elected president, Trump and members of his transition team have tempered the heat of expectations, admitting that a resolution to the Ukraine conflict requires at least several months.

In the interview with Newsmax, Trump blamed outgoing President Joe Biden for allowing the conflict to escalate before his eyes and added that the fighting has had negative consequences and effects on both sides, Ukraine and Russia.../
