Türkiye-Syria earthquake: 2.5 million children need humanitarian support
ANKARA-UNICEF recalls that 2 months after the two devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and northern Syria, 2.5 million children in Turkey still need humanitarian support and are at risk of falling into poverty, child labor or child marriage."Children have had their lives turned upside down by the earthquake and while the humanitarian response has been swift and significant, the reality is that the immediate future of millions of children remains uncertain and the ability of families to start picking up the pieces of their lives is severely hampered,” said Regina De Dominicis, UNICEF Representative in Turkey. "Greater support is key to ensuring children are protected and their needs are met as a central part of the recovery."As the Government of Turkey and humanitarian partners continue to work to respond to urgent needs and ensure basic services, families need longer-term support to recover and start rebuilding their lives. Children need to be at the center of recovery efforts so they are not impacted by the disaster for years or even decades to come.
