The United Nations has announced that one million people have fled their homes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo following the deterioration of the security situation in various parts of the country.
This has been explained by Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who has noted that the human rights situation continues to deteriorate before our eyes.
Speaking before the United Nations Human Rights Council, Volker Türk said: The combination of increasing violence, regional and international interests, illegal mining and weak rule of law to the detriment of people who have already been damaged by decades of conflict, it is among the things that have become more suitable for peace and respect for human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He also said, Between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024, 85 percent of violations and attacks committed in the DRC took place in the war-affected regions in the east of the country. Militants from armed groups are believed to be responsible for 61% of such acts, including deadly attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.
Sexual harassment is on the rise, with 700 new victims identified. "Armed groups kidnap, hold hostages and keep women and girls in sexual slavery, many of them are killed after being raped," Türk said.
