US confirms supply of cluster bombs to Ukraine
The Biden administration has confirmed it is preparing to announce the supply of cluster bombs to Ukraine. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said during a briefing that the Pentagon will announce a new military aid package in Kiev yesterday."Our assistance to Ukraine is based on needs identified on the ground, and artillery is a key component to enable Kiev forces to defend themselves and carry out the counter-offensive," he said, recalling that Russia has used cluster bombs since the beginning of the conflict.
"The weapons that we will supply to Ukraine have a lower lethality rate than those used by the Russians: we are aware of the risks for the civilian population, and for this reason we have postponed the decision for as long as possible", continued Sullivan, reiterating that the Kiev authorities will not use the weapons on foreign territory, and that they have undertaken to minimize any risk to civilians.
