The US Congress on Friday (15/12/2023) approved a bill that cancels the possibility of the US President unilaterally withdrawing from the NATO alliance without obtaining Senate approval in the US Congress. This plan was presented by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio, which was attached to the US defense budget bill. This legislation is now on US President Joe Biden's desk and once signed it will become law. This bill was approved by the US Congress at the same time that Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, was leading in election polls. Trump is an opponent of NATO and has repeatedly called for the withdrawal of the United States from this military alliance. This new law emphasizes Congress's commitment as a legislative body to NATO. This alliance has become very important for America, especially after Russia's attack on Ukraine. Recently, the New York Times warned that former US President Donald Trump's possible victory in the 2024 elections in this country could lead to Washington's withdrawal from NATO. The US presidential election will be held in November 2024, and Joe Biden and Donald Trump are the leading candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties respectively, but Trump is ahead of Biden in the latest election polls.(PH)
