64 farmers drowned in a boat accident in northern Nigeria
At least 64 people are feared drowned in a boat accident in a river in Zamfara state, northwest Nigeria.
A wooden boat carrying 70 farmers capsized while transporting them across the river to their farms near Gummi town on Saturday morning.
The local authorities quickly mobilized and gathered the residents of this area and started a rescue operation, and after three hours, only six survivors were rescued from the water.
This is the second incident in the Gummi area, according to Aminu Nuhu Falale, the area manager who led the rescue efforts.
The local government official has noted that emergency teams are continuing their search in the hope of finding more survivors.
More than 900 farmers depend on crossing the river every day to reach their farms, but only two boats are available, often causing congestion, said the traditional ruler of the area.
