Prosecutors in the countries led by the military governments of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have launched an investigation against the French journalist Wassim Nasr, accusing him of being an "associate of terrorism" due to his analysis of attacks by terrorist gangs.
Nasr, who works with the France 24 broadcasting organization, and a security analyst, has been giving his assessment and opinion about the terrorism that took root in Mali in 2012, and spread to other countries in the Sahel region of West Africa.
Prosecutors from the judicial departments responsible for terrorism in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger all issued a joint statement, which was broadcast on their national television on Wednesday.
They accuse Nasr of making comments that "are tantamount to open acts of publicity and support" for terrorist activities, referring to the recent attack in Bamako and the 2023 attack in the Burkina Faso town of Djibo.
Also in the past, Mali took the step of suspending in the country the broadcasts of the French Radio RFI and the television France 24 and TV5 Monde for several months, following the violation of the Media Control Law, and for reporting false news that the army kills civilians.
Likewise, the governments of Niger and Burkina Faso have suspended the broadcasts of RFI and France 24 sponsored by the government of Paris, allegedly for broadcasting false news and distortions.
