President William Ruto of Kenya has been criticized for failing to implement his order to prevent government officials from sharing charity donations as one of the ways to fight corruption.

Ruto was criticized for breaking his order to end church fellowships to fight corruption

President Ruto issued the order in July 2024 to quell the protest of Gen Z youths who complained that the characteristic of leaders and senior officials in the government to give large sums of money in donations promotes the evil of corruption.

At that time, Kapseret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi, who is an associate of President Ruto, was accused of giving 20 million shillings, at one time, in a charity, while people questioned the source of the money.

However, last Sunday September 15, 2024, a few hours after arriving in the country from a visit to Germany, President William Ruto of Kenya and his family attended a service at the Stewards Revival Pentecostal Church, Nairobi where he offered to donate Shs. 10 million to support the construction of a new building in the church.

President Ruto tried to defend the action claiming that what he did was not a collaboration, but "just a donation".

While announcing the measures his government will take to prevent senior officials and civil servants from sharing charity donations, President Ruto instructed the Attorney General to devise a law to achieve the measure.

Earlier this September, the Majority Leader in the National Assembly of Kenya, Aaron Cheruiyot, published a bill aimed at controlling senior officials and government employees from participating in syndicates.

According to the Public Donations Regulation Bill of 2024, the officials will need to obtain a license before engaging in any fundraising activities.

In addition, the bill aims to establish legal guidelines to manage the operation of donations in order to maintain transparency and accountability in the operation of such activities.
