Guterres notes his great concern about the fighting in Sudan

The spokesperson of the Secretary General of the United Nations has said that Antonio Guterres is very concerned following the recent clashes between the Sudanese army and the opposing militias in the important Darfur town of El-Fasher in the country.

The international community recently warned about the escalation of fighting in El Fasher, the last town in Darfur state in Sudan that is held by fighters of the Rapid Support Force (RSF).

Farhan Haq, the Spokesman of the Secretary General of the United Nations, has stated that Guterres is saddened by reports of the use of heavy weapons in densely populated areas, resulting in dozens of civilians being killed, massive displacement and destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Haq added that: The Secretary General of the UN is particularly saddened by the situation of ordinary citizens in the city of El Fasher who have already been affected by hunger and its effects in the period of more than one year of war.

Sudan has plunged into a major war between the country's army led by military leader General Abdel Fattah al Burhan and the Rapid Support Fighters (RSF) led by his former deputy Commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Witnesses have said that the fighting broke out last Friday and continued until the end of the week with airstrikes being witnessed on the north and east side of the city of El Fasher along with the firing of rockets.

The Secretary General of the United Nations has called for a cessation of hostilities as soon as possible and called on all relevant parties to allow civilians to float in safe areas and facilitate humanitarian services.

At least 27 people were killed and 130 injured last Friday in clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF.
