A Cameroon government official has been kidnapped in the English-speaking part of the country
A Cameroonian government official and five others have been abducted in the predominantly English-speaking northwest of the country. That is according to internal and security sources of the country.
A local security officer has confirmed the news and said that, Nicholas Nkongho Manchang, the sub-governor of Bamenda II municipality, has been kidnapped at gunpoint with five other people, in the village of Ntumbaw. The officer, who did not want his name to be mentioned, said that the incident happened last night, Wednesday. He said: "The high-ranking regional official and other officials were traveling on the road to an official ceremony in another city when they were kidnapped and taken to an unknown location. We are looking for them. There was no military convoy to protect the deputy governor when he was kidnapped." Although until the time we are preparing this report, there was no group that claimed to be involved in the kidnapping, but such actions are often carried out by groups of people who want to act in the area. The separatist fighters have been carrying out frequent attacks in the area since 2017 after starting a war between themselves and government forces in an effort to create an independent state in the two English-speaking regions of northwest and southwest Cameroon. Last January, at least five separatist fighters were killed in an attack carried out by the Cameroonian army against the armed men in the North-West region of the English-speaking country.
