The National Drought Management Authority in Kenya (NDMA) has said that approximately 479,498 children aged five years in 23 drought areas in the country are suffering from malnutrition and need treatment.
Although the cases of malnutrition have continued to be high, but the number shows a decrease from 760,488 in July. This is according to the September report of the NDMA issued in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
The decrease in cases of the disease is due to the availability of milk for children, although at a low level, and the use of various foods due to NDMA increasing the purchasing power of the families of these children.
The report added that 110,169 pregnant and lactating mothers are malnourished and need urgent health care. Malnutrition cases are due to adverse weather events, low income and poor health services.
NDMA has also noted that 1 million Kenyans are still in need of humanitarian aid, a number that has not changed since July.
According to the World Health Organization WHO, until the end of June this year, about 10.8 million children and almost 1 million pregnant and lactating women have suffered from malnutrition and need urgent treatment in the Horn of Africa.
