Arrest of two US soldiers for murder in West Germany
German police said on Saturday that two American soldiers were arrested for stabbing a young German citizen in the country's west. Police in Trier, Germany, said in a statement that two suspects were arrested following the death of a 28-year-old man, CNN news agency reported. The murder occurred when a fight broke out between several people at an entertainment event in the small town of Wittlich (Rhineland-Palatinate) on Saturday evening. According to eyewitnesses, the police said: "During this conflict, the victim received a stab wound, and four people, two men and two women, fled the scene." Police said two 25- and 26-year-old U.S. servicemen who fled the scene were quickly identified and arrested. The United States has stationed military forces in Germany since World War II, but the number of American troops in Germany has declined since the fall of the Berlin Wall from 200,000 in 1990 to about 34,500 today.
