Between 1934 and 1976, about 33 thousand citizens were forcibly sterilized in Sweden as part of the eugenics program. Most of the victims were women. They were sterilized for being "mentally disabled" or "half-mad". Swedish officials believed they were building a society that would be the envy of the world. According to the Euronews website, 71-year-old film director Jill Sondest, who had not spoken to anyone about the darkest historical moments of her family, said: "It was a secret that no one dared to talk about. Society was ashamed that people were being forcibly sterilized in Sweden." Sandest was shocked to learn that four of his uncles had been forcibly sterilized. He said: "Their crime was poverty." Stockholm University history professor Maya Rancis, working in a government archive, discovered classified documents about the citizen sterilization program. According to some sources, Germany, inspired by the Swedish plan, later implemented this plan as well.
