At least 6 people have been killed in a bus shooting in Ghana
At least six people have been shot dead and seven others injured when a group of unknown armed men attacked the people on a bus in one of the northeastern regions of Ghana.
Hamza Amadu, the chief executive officer of Bawku municipality has confirmed the news and said that the incident happened when the bus was traveling from Bawku in the Upper East region, in the northeast of Ghana. He said, the dead include two men and four women, and the injured are receiving treatment in two hospitals close to the area. He added that "Security has been strengthened with military and police patrols, while a curfew has been imposed to control people's movements at night." He has also said that, the joint operation of the police and the army continues to search and arrest the perpetrators of this terrible crime. The area is located a few kilometers from the border with Burkina Faso, and has recently been plagued by armed conflict due to a long-standing conflict between chiefs and other criminal activities. The attack happened a week after the one last Wednesday when unknown armed men attacked and killed two people in the neighborhood. Amadu has also said that, right now there is a fear of increasing tensions especially due to the fact that, last week government soldiers killed three people and announced that they had to shoot those people to protect themselves. The incident happened on January 19, 2024. Also recently, officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) had to stop the voter registration exercise for the by-election in the area of Bawku, in order to protect its staff and equipment due to the great tension in the area.
