AU wants Ethiopia and Somalia to tolerate each other and reduce the tension between them
The African Union (AU) has called on Ethiopia and Somalia to tolerate each other and take measures to reduce the existing tension, especially due to the current situation of deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries.
The call has been made by the AU Peace and Security Council in a statement following its meeting held on Wednesday which highlighted the current state of relations between Ethiopia and Somalia. The Council called on the two countries of the Horn of Africa to participate in a genuine dialogue to find a solution and peace on the issue and under the same direction of the African countries to solve their own issues. The statement of the African Union has also encouraged the two countries to refrain from actions and declarations that may provoke tension and adversely affect good neighborliness, friendship and solidarity between them. Tensions continue in the relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia after Ethiopia and Somaliland, a region that declared independence from Somalia, signed an agreement earlier this month to allow Ethiopia access to the Red Sea on the condition of officially recognizing Somaliland's independence. Somalia says that Somaliland is a part of its land that cannot be separated from other Somali lands, so the agreement has no legal force and called its ambassador to Ethiopia to declare its strong opposition to the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The African Union has asked the two countries to respect the basic principles of the AU and international law in their bilateral and international relations. Similarly, you have asked foreign parties to observe the law and not interfere in the internal affairs of the two AU member countries.
