Azimio Kenya Union threatens to start a protest against the increase in the price of bread
Leaders of the Umoja-One Kenya Alliance led by Raila Odinga have threatened to take to the streets and start protests against the government of President William Ruto after the National Assembly approved the proposal of the Ministry of Finance to increase the price of basic goods such as bread.
The leaders of the Unity Declaration believe that President William Ruto's "hustler" slogan of defending the weak during his presidential election campaigns has lost its meaning. They have also asked President Ruto to stick to the manifesto of the Kenya First coalition which promised Kenyans of all walks of life a better life, lower costs of living and an inclusive government. This follows the action of the National Assembly of Kenya to approve the proposal submitted by the Minister of Finance, Njuguna Ndung'u, to request the introduction of VAT on bread, milk and other products. Apart from bread, the Parliament has also passed a proposal to introduce value added tax (VAT) on the cost of financial services such as digital credit and debit cards, taxes on sending money through M-pesa, alcohol Vodka and Whiskey and tax paid annually by car owners. Addressing the citizens of Embakasi South, the leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement, Kalonzo Musyoka, has said that the opposition will not sit back and watch Kenyans being burdened by new taxes. "Even the cost of bread is rising? If you are denying bread to Kenyans, what are you doing now?, asked Kalonzo Musyoka insisting that the opposition will cooperate with his supporters to restart the protest.
