At the G20 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the APEC meeting in Lima, Peru, international leaders will be more preoccupied with how to handle Trump's astonishing return than with Biden's farewell speech. He intends to go to both conferences, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who gave a briefing. On matters such as climate change, trade, and the Middle East, as well as in Ukraine, Biden's embrace of international alliances faces a potential challenge from Trump's "America First" program, which has just made its way back into the world arena. In a statement, Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden will attend the APEC regional summit in Lima from November 14-16.
While there has been no official announcement regarding the possibility of a repeat of last year's encounter, he did meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the APEC summit in California. Following his meeting with indigenous leaders and others striving to "protect this critical ecosystem," Biden will embark on what the White House has described as the first visit by a sitting US president to Manaus, located in Brazil's Amazon jungle. Finally, on November 18 and 19, Biden will attend his final G20 conference in Rio, where topics such as climate change will be discussed, according to the report.
In his four years as president, Biden has worked to restore American preeminence abroad following the upheaval caused by Trump's first term, during which he attacked US friends and courted tyrants like Kim Jong Un of North Korea. Whatever Trump 2.0 brings to the world, nobody knows anymore. Canada, Mexico, Europe, and other trading partners could be hit hard by a trade war with China if Trump goes through with his intentions to impose massive tariffs. There is chatter that Trump may try to hasten a peace accord with Ukraine by meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Putin, his presence at this G20 meeting would "wreck" the event, hence he has decided not to attend.
