Biden wipes out an extra $4.5 billion in student loans
Thursday, US President Joe Biden forgiven another $4.5 billion in student loans for more than 60,000 people. This brings the total number of people who have had their student loans forgiven to over 1 million who work for the government. The White House said in a statement that the Biden-Harris Administration has accepted $175 billion in student loan relief for almost 5 million people.
This has been done in a number of different ways. Republicans have said that the Democratic president's plan to forgive student loans is an abuse of power and unfairly helps people with college degrees while others don't get any help. This month, in St. Louis, US District Judge Matthew Schelp, who was appointed by Republican former President Donald Trump, issued a preliminary injunction that stops the Biden administration from "mass canceling" student loans and forgiving principal or interest under the plan until the state's lawsuit is over.
