British police scandals continue
Former British police officer charged with immorality. British prosecutors on Friday sanctioned sex offense charges against Michael Lockwood, former director general of the Independent Police Conduct Authority. They include six counts, including charges of indecent assault and three offenses of rape, against a girl under the age of 16, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
The crimes were allegedly committed between October 1985 and March 1986. Lockwood resigned from his post last December after it emerged that he was the subject of a police investigation. "After careful consideration of all the evidence provided to us by the Humberside Police, we have filed charges against 64-year-old Michael Lockwood for nine crimes under the Sexual Offenses Act of 1956," said Rosemary Ainslie, head of crime investigation at the CPS. Lockwood is due to appear in Hull Magistrates' Court on June 28, according to Sky News.
According to a report released on Thursday by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) and Channel 5, British police officers are accused of rape on average once a week. Over the past five years, more than 300 British officers have been accused of rape and 500 of sexual harassment, the report says. Only 10 of those accused of sexual harassment were convicted. The vast majority - 350 people - still work in the police.
