Burkina Faso extends military rule for five years after national consultation
Colonel Moussa Diallo, Chairman of the preparatory committee for the national negotiation process of Burkina Faso, has said that they have classified the transition period as 60 months from July 2 this year.
He added that the leader of the revolution and Acting President Ibrahim Traore can run for the presidency in any election after the end of the transition period. The army has been in power in Burkina Faso since 2022 by carrying out two revolutions that have been legalized in many parts of the country due to the lack of security in the country.
Armed groups linked to the terrorist network of al Qaida and the Daesh group (ISIS) have been carrying out attacks and creating a chaotic situation in Burkina Faso since 2015; attacks that have killed thousands of people and caused millions of others to become refugees.
Burkina Faso's initial national negotiations passed an agreement that appointed Traore as President and delineated the government and parliament. The agreement defined a transition period towards a civil administration which ends in July this year, however the interim President Ibrahim Traore has warned several times that it will be difficult to hold elections in Burkina Faso due to the poor security situation.
