Burundi announces a new outbreak of cholera
The Ministry of Health of Burundi has announced the news of a renewed outbreak of cholera, so much so that yesterday Wednesday 15 cases of the disease were reported in the western region of the country which has a shortage of water. Polycarpe Ndayizeye, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Health and AIDS Control of Burundi has told reporters in Gitega that: "The cholera patients are admitted in Bujumbura municipal hospitals and other medical centers." Ndayizeye has asked the health authorities and citizens of the areas affected by the disease in the cities of Bujumbura, Gatumba and Rugombo as well as all other stakeholders to join their efforts to deal with the new outbreak of cholera. In addition, he has asked the citizens, especially those living in the most affected districts, to take great care of cleanliness in everything.
Earlier this year, cholera killed two people in the health district of Bujumbura, especially in Kajaga beach on Lake Tanganyika. Water shortages are frequently reported in western Burundi, especially during the dry season that runs from May to September, and occasionally lead to cholera outbreaks. The World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region said in its August report that cholera has affected 15 countries. The current outbreak of the disease has affected six countries, including Burundi, Cameroon, Kenya, Msum. Dirty environment is the main reason. of cholera, Uganda and Zimbabwe due to reporting more than 200 new cases of the disease in those countries.
