Canada imposes sanctions on US companies
Economists warn that the trade war could reduce global prosperity and trigger new global inflation.
After Donald Trump told Canada that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on the country's goods entering the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has responded in kind by announcing that American goods entering the country will also be subject to a 25 percent tariff.
Now the leader of Ontario, Canada's most populous province that accounts for about 38 percent of the country's GDP, has also laid out some of the consequences of Trump's actions for American companies operating in the province. Doug Ford has said that American companies will be immediately banned from Ontario contracts until the United States removes its tariffs on Canada.
Ford said American businesses should expect to lose tens of billions of dollars in new revenue, and they should blame President Trump for this action.
The premier of Ontario has continued to state that the province will take its own action in response to President Trump's actions in which Ontario suspended a contract signed in November last year between the province and Elon Musk's Starlink satellite company, a company that provides high-speed internet services worldwide.
That said, Musk is one of Trump's closest allies, and as their economics editor explains, this decision may have been made in the hope of forcing Trump's aides to confront the President about the costs of his policies.
The American national anthem was also booed on Saturday night during games held in the cities of Ottawa, Ontario, Calgary and Alberta.
One Canadian at Sunday night's game who intentionally booed the US national anthem said: "I have a lot of friends in the US and I go there often. I usually stand when the national anthem is played, but today I'm not at all happy with American politics."
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a 25 percent tariff on US goods to counter Donald Trump's new tariffs on Canadian goods.
Trudeau's announcement came hours after Trump ordered a 25 percent tariff increase on Canadian and Mexican goods and a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods, a move that has sparked a new trade war.
