Charges against Trump for attempted election interference
Former US President Donald Trump was indicted by a US federal court on Tuesday over his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. It is the third indictment against 77-year-old Trump since March and the biggest legal threat yet to the former president, who is campaigning for a return to the White House. The Republican Party's 2024 lead candidate faces four counts: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official process, obstruction and attempt to obstruct an official process, and conspiracy to violate the law. The indictment alleges that Trump laid the groundwork for his "conspiracies" by disseminating false claims about his election victory and by "creating an intense national atmosphere of distrust and anger and undermining public confidence in the administration of the election". , all of which "aimed at a fundamental function of the US federal government".
There are said to be six unnamed co-conspirators, including four lawyers, a Justice Department official and a political adviser. Another charge was brought against Trump on Friday for attempting to "alter, destroy, mutilate or conceal evidence," inducing another person to do so and willfully providing national defense information in connection with a Withhold presentation of military activities in another country. These charges come in addition to 37 allegations already filed for Trump's alleged illegal possession of classified information at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida home. Trump has so far pleaded not guilty to all charges. Federal impeachments do not prevent a candidate from running for the presidency.
