"Enough with the monarchy". Jamaica does not want to depend on England
The Jamaican authorities want to hold a referendum on independence from the British monarchy and the election of its president as soon as possible. This was stated by Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. Earlier, Legal and Constitutional Affairs Minister Marlene Malahoo Forte said Jamaica plans to hold a referendum on independence from the British monarchy and elect its president as early as 2024, and will also demand an apology and reparations from the UK for years of slave trade in the past. Jamaica's prime minister has said he plans to cut ties with the UK soon after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. As Holness noted, the process "slowed down" due to a long period of informational work and consultations with the public. According to the newspaper, during an informal visit to the UK, the Jamaican prime minister confirmed that the country is "on track" to becoming a republic. The Jamaican prime minister added that the British government "has not expressed its opinion" on the conduct of the referendum.
