Former British prime minister ignored China's warnings
The former British Prime Minister announced in a statement that he will visit the island of Taiwan next week. According to the AAA news agency, despite Beijing's repeated warnings about a provocative visit by foreign officials to the island of Taiwan, Liz Truss announced that she plans to visit Taiwan next week and, in addition to meeting with officials from the island, give a speech there.
She said, "Taiwan is a beacon of freedom and democracy. I look forward to expressing solidarity with the people of Taiwan in the face of the extremely aggressive behavior and rhetoric of the Beijing regime."
Truss stepped down just 45 days after becoming British Prime Minister, the shortest tenure in British history. Since her resignation, however, she has become increasingly critical of China, delivering several speeches in recent weeks that have focused on Beijing. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Truss' itinerary and said she would visit the island and talk about its "cultural and economic opportunities" from May 16 to 20.
Beijing officials have yet to comment on Truss' trip to Taiwan, but have consistently condemned such trips and stressed that other countries should not have direct diplomatic relations with the island.
