G7 summit, dialogue between China and the USA to reduce strategic risks
G7 foreign ministers meeting in Karuizawa, Japan today discussed regional developments in the Indo-Pacific, confrontation with China and Russia, the conflict in Ukraine and Afghanistan.
The G7 Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation Steering Group, in a joint statement, reiterated its concerns about "the rapid development of China's nuclear arsenal" and called on Beijing to start consultations with the US on strategic risk reduction on as soon as possible." In light of the rapid development of China's nuclear arsenal and the development of modern delivery systems lacking transparency, the G7 underlines its concern and calls on the People's Republic of China to start early consultations with the United States to mitigate the risks strategic objectives and promote stability through greater openness in China's nuclear policy, plans and capabilities,” the paper notes. Previously, the United States has repeatedly stated the need to maintain contacts with China in order to minimize threats in the nuclear sphere in the context of their Asian competitor's growing nuclear arsenals.
