Houthi Rebels Threaten Renewed Attacks on Israel Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The Ansar Allah movement, which is the leader of Yemen's Houthi rebels, has declared their readiness to recommence attacks on Israel in the event that hostilities in the Gaza Strip resume. This declaration suggests a potential escalation in regional tensions.

In a televised address that was transmitted by the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah channel, rebel leader Abdel Malik al-Houthi issued a warning that their forces will remain on high alert. In the Red Sea, the Houthis have launched more than 30 missile and drone attacks since November 2023, which have disrupted nearly 12% of global commerce and necessitated major shipping companies to reroute.

These attacks have targeted Israeli and Western-linked vessels. In response to the escalation, the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted at least 20 airstrikes on Houthi-controlled positions in Yemen. Al-Houthi reiterated his organization's endorsement of Hezbollah and Lebanon, asserting that the ongoing presence of Israeli forces in the disputed territories of Lebanon is unjustified.

Over 200 Hezbollah fighters and dozens of Israeli soldiers have been killed since October as a result of the conflict, which has seen Hezbollah and Israeli forces exchange fire virtually daily. Additionally, Yemen, which is already grappling with a protracted humanitarian crisis, is currently in dire need of assistance, with more than 18 million individuals. The region could be further destabilized by the resumption of military operations.
