Mohammad Al-Ghaigh, a Palestinian political analyst, has identified a strategic shift in Israel's military operations. He posits that the increased assaults in the West Bank are an attempt to make up for the setbacks in Gaza.
Al-Ghaigh declared on Tuesday that Israeli forces had intentionally chosen to convert the West Bank into an active conflict zone months prior. He contended that the present escalation is intended to bolster the morale of Israeli troops and settlers in the wake of their ordeals in Gaza.
Israeli military operations have resulted in substantial casualties in the West Bank and Gaza since October 2023. Palestinian health authorities have reported that Israeli incursions and settler attacks have resulted in the injury or death of over 29,000 Palestinians in Gaza and over 6,000 Palestinians in the West Bank Israeli forces have conducted at least 250 military operations in the West Bank in the past month, with a particular emphasis on areas such as Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nablus
Al-Ghaigh underscored that the escalation of Israeli operations in the West Bank is consistent with the increasing influence of Palestinian resistance organizations in the region. He observed that Israeli leaders are making an effort to reassure the approximately 500,000 inhabitants in the occupied West Bank that their security is a top priority. "They are trying to send a message to settlers: ‘We are here to protect you,’" he emphasized.
The political analyst also cautioned that the ongoing Israeli offensives are causing instability rather than restoring stability. According to reports, Palestinian resistance groups in the West Bank have conducted at least 120 retaliatory attacks since the beginning of 2024, a substantial increase from previous years.
Not only have Israeli military operations increased violence, but they have also exacerbated humanitarian concerns. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that home demolitions and military operations have resulted in the displacement of more than 50,000 Palestinians in the West Bank.
In the interim, Israel's administrative detention policy has resulted in the detention of thousands of Palestinians. Rights organizations have estimated that at least 9,000 Palestinians are presently being held without trial.
The persistent resistance in both Gaza and the West Bank, despite Israeli efforts to regain control, indicates that a long-term resolution remains illusive. The cycle of violence will persist, exacerbate the instability in the region, according to analysts, unless a fundamental change in Israel's strategy is implemented.
