Hungarian PM Criticizes European Union
Hungary's prime minister delivered scathing criticism of the European Union, saying Brussels was a contemporary bad joke.
According to Reuters, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in his speech on the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the uprising against Soviet Union rule in this country, Monday (23/10/2023) said, "History sometimes repeats itself. Sometimes, what started as a tragedy is now has become the best comedy,". Comparing the Soviet Union and the European Union, the Hungarian Prime Minister added, "Moscow's government cannot be reformed, but Brussels and the European Union can still be reformed,". "The current leaders of the European Union are incapable of protecting Europe's security, freedom and prosperity," Orban said. According to Reuters, relations between Hungary and the European Union were tense during Orban's 13-year period in power, due to disagreements in various fields, including immigrants and pressure on the judiciary, media and academia.
The European Union has suspended payments of billions of euros in financial aid to Budapest, due to concerns about the implementation of Orban's economic policy law. Economists believe that Hungary has no desire to resolve financial disputes with Brussels, and its political actions are focused on obtaining the best results in the European Parliament elections in June 2024, so the uungarian Prime Minister will continue the policy of confrontation with the European Union and the United States.
