Lebanon, today we vote on the renewal of the Unifil mission

Today the United Nations Security Council is expected to approve the resolution to extend by one year the mandate of the interposition mission in southern Lebanon (Unifil) which will expire at midnight today. The vote scheduled for yesterday was postponed today due to disagreements between the 15 members of the Security Council on the work of the UN peacekeepers. The main dispute concerns the freedom of movement of Unifil soldiers, cited by the disputed "paragraph 16" introduced last year. In the 2022 resolution, the text stated that “Unifil does not need to receive prior authorization or permits to carry out its tasks included in the mandate” and “is authorized to conduct its operations independently”.
