Mali's military regime has appointed a new prime minister after sacking Maiga
The military administration council of Mali yesterday Alkhamisi appointed its spokesman, Abdoulaye Maiga, as prime minister a day after firing Choguel Maiga who criticized the administration for postponing democratic elections and restoring the order of the Constitution.
Choguel Maiga was quoted over the weekend criticizing the failure of Mali's military regime to hold elections within the promised 24-month transition period to restore democratic rule, a statement that angered the ruling generals.
The military rulers, who took power in coups in 2020 and 2021, had promised to hold elections in February but have postponed the exercise indefinitely due to technical issues.
At the end of last year, the Malian army announced that it will postpone the presidential election scheduled for February, which intends to restore the civilian authority to power.
The reasons given by one army officer include issues related to the adoption of a new constitution this year and the review of voter lists. The President of Mali is elected for a five-year term.
