Mapinduzi Niger: ECOWAS chiefs are meeting today in Accra Ghana
The meeting of the chiefs of forces of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is being held this Saturday, August in Accra, Ghana to discuss the fate of the military coup in Niger. This meeting is taking place a few hours after the recommendations of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government who gathered at the Summit in Abuja, Nigeria yesterday. The heads of the armed forces of the countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet on August 12, 2023 in Accra, following a request to ask this force to be prepared and sent to Niger to restore constitutional rule, after diplomatic methods have not borne fruit . ECOWAS - which includes 15 West African countries - has been working to end the series of military coups that have taken place in 4 of its member countries in the past 3 years.
Muhammad Bazoum, the President of Niger who was overthrown by the army last Thursday, the leader of the revolution in Niger, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, announced a transitional government made up of 21 ministers and ignored the call to restore President Mohamed Bazoum to power. The Nigerien soldiers say they will not accept being dragged and pressured by Westerners led by the United States and France, who want them to return to camp and restore President Bazoum to power. ECOWAS called on the soldiers who overthrew Mohamed Bazoum to restore Niger's president to power within seven days - a period that ended last Sunday - or face military intervention to restore 'constitutional rule'.
