Mozambique government forms commission to investigate how prisons were broken and prisoners escaped

The Mozambican government has formed a commission to investigate the mass escape of prisoners from two prisons in the country's capital, Maputo. The prisoner escape operation that took place last Wednesday and involved 1,534 prisoners from the Central Prison and the Machava maximum security prison, known as BO, led to clashes between the Prisons Service and the attackers. At least 33 people were killed in the incident.

The commission, which has already begun work, is investigating the circumstances under which the prisoners escaped and also identifying the shortcomings that led to the escape of the prisoners. The commission is also investigating the negligence of those responsible for protecting the security of the prisons and will later submit its report to the government. This was stated by Mozambique's Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Filimao Suaze.

Deputy Minister Suaze also said that the commission will analyze the deaths that occurred during the operation, which is still ongoing to search for escaped prisoners. According to the deputy minister, approximately 280 prisoners have already been recaptured, more than 100 of whom were arrested on Friday, thanks to the cooperation of family members and good citizens. He added that most of the escaped prisoners have returned voluntarily or their relatives have handed them over to prison officials because it would be very difficult for them to continue living a life of escape all the time.
