Temitope Ilori, the head of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS in Nigeria (NACA) has told journalists during an awareness campaign in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state in the southwest of Nigeria that, more than 22,000 new cases of the AIDS virus (HIV) which attacks the body's immune system in the initial stage of AIDS, have been reported in the country since the beginning of this year until now.
Speaking about the increasing rate of AIDS infection in Nigeria, Ilori said: "About 140,000 children between the ages of 0 and 14 are living with HIV."The official said that, Nigeria continues to face great challenges in preventing the transmission of the disease from mother to child, complaining about the decrease in national support to prevent the spread of the infectious disease.Giving official statistics, Ilori said: In 2023 alone, Nigeria recorded 75,000 new HIV infections and 45,000 deaths related to HIV/AIDS.
