North Korea fires ballistic missiles after second US submarine arrives in south

North Korea fired two ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast early Tuesday (Seoul time), the South Korean military said. The launch came after a US nuclear submarine reached a naval base in South Korea. Japan also reported the launch. Japanese media quoted a government source as saying multiple rockets may have been fired. The situation on the Korean peninsula is tense. South Korea and the United States continue to conduct joint exercises and flex their military muscles in the region. North Korea considers the use of US military assets on the peninsula to be provocative. The nuclear submarine was the second of its kind to dock in South Korea in a week. It reached the base on the southern island of Jeju. The submarine was scheduled to load military supplies during an unspecified operational mission, the South Korean Navy said. The USS Kentucky, an Ohio-class submarine, arrived in Busan Harbor on July 18, marking the first visit to the country by a US ballistic missile submarine in nearly 44 years.
