Oxfam: America's veto of ceasefire resolution was another nail in the coffin of trust in this country
International aid organization Oxfam criticized the US veto of the UAE's proposed ceasefire resolution in Gaza, calling it "another nail in the coffin of US credibility on human rights issues."
As a permanent member of the Security Council, the country on Friday vetoed a resolution proposed by the United Arab Emirates to establish a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, despite receiving 13 votes in favor in the council. At a Friday evening meeting of the UN Security Council, a resolution on the United Arab Emirates proposal was put to a vote, with 13 of the 15 members of the Security Council voting in favor, the US and UK voting against, and another member of that council abstaining. According to CNN, Abby Maxman, president and CEO of Oxfam America, said in a statement Saturday morning: “Today, the Biden administration lost another opportunity to deliver on its demands to support human rights and the international rule of law.” She added: “The world is ready to end the horrific massacre in the Gaza Strip and focus on freeing prisoners and helping Palestinians rebuild their lives.” Hamas Meanwhile, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) issued a statement and said it strongly condemns America's veto of the Gaza ceasefire resolution and that America's actions are immoral and inhumane. Ezzat al-Rashq Ezzat al-Rashq, a member of Hamas's political bureau, also said: "The veto of the Security Council resolution shows the direct involvement of the United States in the murder of the Palestinian people." Al-Rashq continued: “Washington’s veto of the resolution to end the war is the direct participation of the United States, together with the Zionist occupation regime, in the murder of the Palestinian nation and the commission of new crimes of genocide of this nation.”
