Parliamentary elections in Madagascar were held on Wednesday, with citizens voting to elect 163 members of the National Assembly.
Polling stations across the country opened from 6:00 am and the exercise continued until 5:00 pm, with about 11.6 million registered voters casting their votes.
Arsene Dama, president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), visited several polling stations together with international observers and reported that everything went as planned.
Regarding the reported irregularities, such as the suspicion of pre-marked ballot papers, he assured that an investigation would be conducted to confirm the existence or non-existence of such errors.
A total of 23 international and 82 national organizations were approved by CENI to have observers in the election. And the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Madagascar Issa Sanogo praised the efforts to ensure the participation of all people, especially young people and the disabled in voting.
President Andry Rajoelina initially asked all citizens of Madagascar to fully participate in the election, while emphasizing the importance of voting for MPs in each district.
The parliamentary elections have been held after the presidential elections held in November and which witnessed the re-election of Rajoelina amidst controversy after the opposition boycotted.
