Prison stabbing of police officer who killed George Floyd
The police officer who killed George Floyd was stabbed by another inmate in a prison in the southwestern US state of Arizona.
Former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of the murder of African-American George Floyd and is in prison, was wounded in a knife attack. This was reported by the Associated Press (AP). According to his sources, the attacker is also a prisoner. According to the AP, the US Federal Bureau of Prisons reported a knife attack at the correctional facility where Chauvin is serving his sentence, but did not specify the name of the victim. The statement also said the injured inmate was taken to the hospital.
Chauvin was previously sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the May 2020 murder of Floyd. The death of Floyd, who was detained on suspicion of using a counterfeit check for $20 in a supermarket, became the reason for the start of mass protests against police brutality. The demonstrations escalated into street riots, during which protesters burned shops and cars. Gradually, protests and riots spread to other cities. During them, 29 people died. More than 14 thousand riot participants were arrested.
