The plight of women and children in the Gaza Strip according to the UN
A group of the country's representatives to the UN at a Security Council meeting, presenting reports on the plight of women and children in the Gaza Strip, called for a permanent ceasefire.
At a Security Council meeting on Wednesday, the executive director of the UN women's department highlighted the disregard for international norms and widespread human rights violations in Gaza. She emphasized the red line of forced displacement of Palestinians, stating that the international justice mechanism is broken. Women in Gaza, feeling abandoned, urgently seek an end to the violence. Additionally, the executive director of UNICEF, Katherine Russell, stressed that the humanitarian pause is insufficient, with around 450 thousand children in the West Bank and Gaza needing assistance.
The UN Population Fund's executive director, Natalia Kanem, deplored the impact of violence on childbirth in Gaza, stating that women endure pregnancy without basic necessities. Jake Sullivan, US national security adviser, announced an expected ceasefire within the next 24 hours, acknowledging potential Hamas reorganization during the four-day pause. German Chancellor Olaf Schulz called for increased humanitarian aid during the ceasefire and pledged continued diplomatic efforts. The situation in Gaza was a central topic at the International Energy Agency meeting, addressing the catastrophic conditions. In response to Hamas' Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, the Zionist regime launched attacks, resulting in numerous Palestinian casualties, missing individuals, and injuries, particularly affecting women and children.
