Ramaphosa emphasizes his commitment to support South Sudan to end the transition period peacefully
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has emphasized his country's commitment to support South Sudan to ensure that the transition period ends peacefully and democratically in the country.
The position of Ramaphosa has been stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa, Mrs. Naledi Pandor who has quoted the president of the country as saying: "We will provide every possible support within our power to ensure that the transition period ends safely in South Sudan.
President Ramaphosa visited South Sudan on Tuesday this week and received a briefing from President Salva Kiir Mayardit and other stakeholders on the status of the implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), which was signed on 12 September 2018
The R-ARCSS contract will expire on February 22, 2025 and must be preceded by the general election scheduled for December 2024.
While in Juba, President Ramaphosa met with the parties involved in the peace agreement and discussed with them the progress of its implementation.
Ramaphosa was quoted as saying: "When we return to South Africa, we hope that the relevant parties will continue to negotiate and reach an agreement on the unfinished issues of the implementation of this agreement so that the people of South Sudan can hope for a peaceful and democratic end to the transition period."
He added that the people of South Sudan are eagerly waiting for the general election that will end the transition period.
