While ISIS continued to use the model of terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda in the region to justify expansionist policies and American presence, it was also used to justify extreme violence against Muslims, presenting the world with a harsh definition of the family-oriented religion of Islam.

However, it has since been emphasized that the final overthrow of ISIS requires the destruction of the ideological foundations of this terrorist group, which is ruled by some explicitly Islamic countries that are allies of the United States.
